Alonso to Ferrari

Fernando AlonsoThere are reports emerging from Spain today that will undoubtedly pour high-octane racing fuel on the rumours that current Renault F1 driver Fernando Alonso is joining Ferrari for 2009.

Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz is reported as saying to Spanish newspaper El Mundo that his team were interested in signing Alonso for this season, but ‘his situation was complicated… because he was free for a year only’.

When you add Mateschitz’s comments to Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo’s quote about Alonso last November (‘world class in every sense, an extraordinary driver’) – then, well, no wonder tongues are wagging…

Fernando is looking increasingly dissatisfied at Renault: “Winning or getting podiums [with Renault] is impossible,” Alonso said to reporters after Bahrain.

“We are pinning our hopes on the improvements for Barcelona. Hopefully we’ll take that small step forwards… and if not, then we’ll have to worry, because for example Fisichella set a better lap than me in the race, and he is driving a Force India.”

But what of Ferrari’s current drivers? Massa has a contract with Ferrari until the end of the 2010 season, but despite dominating in Bahrain, he is the driver under most scrutiny after an otherwise poor start to the 2008 season. However, few have counted on Kimi walking away from F1 after this season…

Raikkonen has signed with Ferrari until the end of the 2009, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Finn announced his retirement at the end of this year – such is his love of life outside of F1…

Perhaps, then, it’s Alonso and Massa at Ferrari for 2009.
