Brazilian GP: practice

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 7:05 pm on Friday October 31, 2008 47 Comments

Today’s second practice session didn’t go well for either McLaren, and if this is a sign of things to come in Sunday’s race, then Lewis’ title dreams are in trouble.

But, stepping back from tabloid like drama creating for a moment, Hamilton left the pits with only minutes to go, hoping to blitz a quick time in the dying seconds. Only it didn’t work, he had a huge wheel lock up at the first corner, then it started raining, and that was that for the day.

It was a huge contrast to the earlier practice one session, where he was dueling title rival Felipe Massa for quickest time, just losing out in that battle.

In the afternoon, besides the McLaren’s poor form – Lewis’ teammate Heikki Kovalainnen finished way down in 15th – Fernando Alonso saved his best for the end of the session, posting the quickest time of the day.

Alonso’s ahead of Massa, then Jarno Trulli – who had a great afternoon and topped the sheet for a large part of it – Kimi Raikkonen, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Nelson Piquet, Nico Rosberg, Hamilton and Nakajima.

Let us know what you think for the pole shootout tomorrow.

I’m thinking Raikkonen pole, Massa second, Lewis third. That will be an issue because Raikkonen will let Massa past and then hold up Lewis. And then Alonso will take him out.

If it rains Massa could be in trouble, he never has been able to drive in the rain without spinning. Rain would play heavily into the hands of mclaren, less strain on Lewis’s engine, and the mclaren is just so much better in the wet.

But I dont think Mclaren is in trouble, I think they were focusing on longer runs. You should expect to see them close to the top during qualifying. Expect to see Heki going for pole and hamilton playing a little more on the safe side.

I reckon Heikki or Massa will be on pole with aggressive strategies – Hamilton and Kimi on the second row… That’s provided Alonso, Trully, Glock and Vettel don’t throw a spanner in the works!

Sorry, that should read ‘Trulli’ – And I don’t think the practice pace will be a concern for mclaren – The middle of the session was wet and they were probably concentrating on longer runs – They’ll be competetive in the Q3 fight

The only way Lewis will crash is if someone takes him out. As for the qualifying, I think that it will be Massa, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Trulli for the top four.

    Go Lewis!

mclaren are sandbagging. like ferrari at shanghai. did hamilton use soft tyres? i dont think he did so. it is long runs that mclaren were focussing on. Lewis made plenty of mistakes aswell.

The grid should be Massa on pole and raikkonen 2nd. ferrari are strong naturally in interlagos. hamilton n alonso will make up row 2 and on row 3 trulli and the useless kovalainen

Everyone is very harsh on Kovalainen. Sure, he isn’t a Senna, Fangio, etc. but he will improve. He has the right mentality: if he stays at McLaren and matures as a driver, he could become a good driver, a David Coulthard style rear gunner to Hakkinen/Hamilton.

Alonso being quickest in second practice doesn’t mean much. Remember, there have been plently of times when a Toyota or a Red Bull or the like has topped the charts during second practice.

As for qualifying, I have a feeling Lewis has learned his lesson. He’ll run all out in quali, but he’ll run heavy on fuel and be content with 3rd on the grid. If he gets pole, all the better. If he does start 3rd, I think he’ll be smart and let the Ferraris run away, and hang back and run a safe race at his own pace in 3rd. At least I hope he does!

    GO LEWIS!!!

Mclaren are playing mind games with Ferrari. They may even purposly qualify lower down the grid, but with very heavily fueled cars. If I was Ron Dennis I would want a few cars between Lewis and Massa at the start…

Mclaren dominated first practice, both Hekki and Lewis posting the fastest speeds per sector, i think they were trying different set ups as lewis kept on going into the pits. also, if you look at the top ten drivers,it is blatant that they will not qualify in these positions as Webber will not qualify in fifth etc

Hamilton will win if it rains….Massa will spin!!

    Heidfeld

Hopefully someone will take Hamilton out at the first corner. Massa for the win and title. Ferrari should hold their title. Good luck David Coulthard, last Grand Prix, don’t crash! Has there been a GP this year that he hasn’t crashed in? He’s cursed I tells ya!

I think Mclaren should fuel lewis light so he can get on pole. He’s a lot less likely to have a first corner incident if he’s in front (except Fuji). Although it will compromise his race stratergy, after the first pits he is unlikely to be bunched up. So he can spend the rest of the race alone and just bring the car home.

The winner of a formula one race depend on some more than what just racer is doing at his part and even the mood towards him in the pit matters even if there is a slight spec of discomfort in it one can fail so as far as Lewis Hamilton is concerned he will not do good in his young ages as most races do alone with the politics involved in a F1 team and then beyond also participating in the game as much as what Lewis Hamilton Does although he can turn and do throttle control the engineers with a hump of ego can stop the engines revs in a corner even if they are not approving Lewis Hamilton to get a win and if that continues which it will Lewis Hamilton will might break records at about when he is in his late twenties or early 30s since at the end of the day F1 is a great team game even greater than that popular so called football thing that’s one lot ugly to start with. If Lewis Hamilton was a engineer to start with he might have won before now though since its not the racers fault to not win a race since he only plays a 1% work in a win although they are too cheeky after winning one as if they did it by themselves.

the thing lewis has to do is get out there and go for it. Thinkin in the frame of mind of being fifth and staying away from the ferraris is the wrong attitude. you have to aim for 1st or you will lose. be positive not negative.

BFG, have you ever heard of a period? your post was complete, run-on sentence nonsense. i know this is just an internet blog, but come on.

and to say the driver is only 1% of the equation…seriously? so why do the top teams bother paying big money for great drivers? if theyre only going to make 1% difference, why not save some money and put Sutil or Webber or someone like that in the McLaren?

and I guarantee you Lewis and all the other drivers in F1 have a better understanding of engineering and fluid dynamics, and the application of those things, than most new engineering graduates. you cant be a driver at the level of F1 if you dont. it just doesnt happen.
