BBC F1 intro

You’ve got to love the internet, anything’s possible on it… Here, a guy on YouTube has imagined what the intro to the BBC’s F1 coverage might look like next year, and he’s done a very good job. Also illustrates how important using Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain is. Hear us BBC!

Whoever created that did a fantastic job. If the actual BBC intro looks anything like that (so long as they use the same song!), I’ll be happy.

That’ll do! Just throw in some more Hamilton loving and images of drivers’ faces and I reckon we’re there! Seriously tho, they had better use Fleetwood Mac, it is THE F1 music.

Totally agree – all that’s needed is to change the 2008 grooved tyres for 2009 slicks and job done.

Don’t want to rain on the parade but that intro is a copy, probably not intentionally though, of the 1999 Season RTE Formula One intro in ireland. The song is the same, down to the engine revving, the sequences, crashes, overtakings etc are similar just updated!

Still looks pretty impressive though, i’m trying to see if i can get a copy of the intro i’m talking about.

Does anyone else have a copy if so please post or link it!

There we go beeb, just use this its great!

Point of note just to be a huge geek the song isn´t actually the chain. Its called motorsport (cant remember who by) and samples the chain heavily.

The really important thing is though that now we get Grands Prix without commercial breaks AND we get that song back!

I think it is time to move on with the tune. The chain has had it’s day. I think the BBC need to make it fresh. After all this time the BBC are going to blow the ITV coverage away. they are going to offer so much much more.. arn’t they!!!!!!

I think its time that for such advancement in F1 broadcasting that a tune such as “Lets Get Ready To Rumble” by Ant and Dec be used.

    Now thats the future!!

The video is cool but as a pedant Ive got a few gripes/questions…

1 Should pit babes be shown before drivers???

2 Will BBC have access to video from the ITV years? I can imagine they have to pay for the use but if ITV decide to play hardball BBC coverage will have very little clips from the last few years.

In response to earlier comments, the footage of the cars doesn’t belong to ITV; infact to FOM, the Formula One Management Team who distribute footage across the world. So I very much doubt that would be a problem.

Loving the Intro though; very professional and well done, must have taken a while, or at least with a sublime level of skill in such a department!

Note to Post 15: this is the chain, right at the end of the song. not sure what that other thing you’re on about is but sounds like it uses a sample of the last 30secs or so of the chain by fleetwood mac. this song SHOULD definitely be used. But it won’t be. Because it doesn’t matter that we’re the ones who are paying for it, the BBC don’t listen!

Class video, I hope they use that for the opening, but maybe with the drivers at the start. The songs good, I have no real opinion on it though. Everyone wants it, so it seems that the only sensible decision for the BBC is to go with public preference.
Can’t wait for Melbourne. But am I the only one who would like to see some snowy F1 racing tracks? Those new snow plows – I mean front wings – should cope well with it…

DONT USE FLEETWOOD CHAIN – THE MAC!!!

Use something else, not that LIFT ME UP crap or the one before that (when Coulthard raced 2001 i think).

I suggest something like Pendulum’s Granite or a proper song that gets faster as it goes on. And the pictures should include legendary corners like Eau Rouge and Copse and should show the World Champion winning at the end. Then it’ll be great.

‘The Chain’ is the only option. I actually cannot believe people claim to like and even prefer that horrendous ‘Lift Me Up’ excuse for music.

As for suggesting Pendulum – why not use one of their older decent tunes instead of ‘Granite’, which is one of their weakest, cheesiest songs for the teenage girls they sadly seem to have targeted as the audience for their recent band orientated format.

I wouldn’t be suprised if the BBC do use The Chain, after giving it a remix in a similar fashion to the beloved Jessica for TG. There is clear scope for adding much heavier drum hits and reworking the guitar tone but there is a danger of spoiling the purity of the simple bass riff with anything too fancy.

I really enjoyed ITV’s montage of the former British F1 champions from the China programme this year – as their use of The Propellerheads ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was a great example of how well drum & bass fits the imagery of F1.

if the BBC do not use the F1 tune as it’s always called it would be a poor start, with Murry Walkers “It’s GO,GO,GO” and Lewis doing some real driving thats what we need.

    Lets GO,GO,GO………

This is the way it should be. There are other pieces of music that would work, but none of them screams Formula 1 in the way “The Chain” (or something that samples it successfully, I suppose) does. Still, no matter what else, the BBC coverage is not going to inclde the words “presented by James Allen” in the opening credits, so it already beats ITV, even if it opens with images of wheelbarrow racing over a sountrack of Terry Wogan’s “The Floral Dance”…

If the BBC do actually listen to the public (after all we give them the money to make their programs)
then they should definately use “the chain”. Ask anyone who grew up in the 70′/80’s to name the F1 thenme tune and they will say “The chain”.
Its simple as that all the bbc need to do is ask Murray to do a few GP’s across the year and use that song and you have a winning formula (no pun)

    Awesome video aswell btw.

Fleetwood Chain – The Mac is old now and needs to be put to rest as their are better alternatives. The Chain had it’s day, choose something different, with a high tempo beat and an infuriating race like feel.

Now you just need to create a couple of short clips for the ad-breaks…. Oh have on, cancel that, we’ve got rid of the ads!

Very good promo. Here’s a very good alternative music suggestion:
    Band: Ozric Tentacles
    Track: Dissolution (The Clouds Disperse)
    Album: Pungent Effulgent

I recommended this to Mark Blundell when I met him shortly before he took up his ITV role. That was a pointless name drop really, wasnt it?

I don’t care what the intro is like as long as they play The Chain,or perhaps Bad To The Bone (George Thorogood & The Destroyers) as used in Terminator 2.Not anything by that Bald phsycho serial killer -

    Superb.

F1 = The Chain. No ifs or buts. To be honest you could show a minute of tarmac and play that song and I’ll be in the mood.

Anything beats that awful Moby thing that sounded like something you’d do rhythmic gymnastics to.

other than fleetwood mac, if rock, or pop, indie, metal or any other silly commercial dribble is use in the intro.

use something fast and modern, anything between 130-180bpm

    Exactly Jam Jar! (88)
This is 2008 (will be 2009). There should be a change. Allright, it shouldn’t be Moby – Lift Me Up. It’s a great song but that was for ITV.
    They need something different.
It needs to be fast and would be great if it was fairly heavy as well.
Something like, Metallica – All nightmare long!

Honestly, check out my suggestion on #95 – it’s perfect. The problem with The Chain is it’s the past, done. Do you want Rentaghost back on the BBC too? Let’s move on and it’s only a very small part of the track anyway.

    What are we worrying for?
Look at the cars for 2009!
    They look ridiculous!
My fear is that more teams will drop out and in that case F1 will come to an end, grid too short.
F1 is ruled by the FIA, governing body of RAC/ADAC/ANWB etc, bonds of mostly elderly people!
    They are no motorsport lovers!
    They have no clue!
Hybrids with funny wings, can’t believe it…

This is just a montage of some good clips with a great music track, its OK but the BBC will do something much better, the standard of opening credits for MOTD and the olympics for example is far superior. I’d like to see more of the olympic style animation blended with some good F1 shots with the chain music…. that would be cool

I hate to say it, but it looks entirely homemade to me. The clips just rigidly succeed one another as they do on any YouTube compilation video, and with no sense of order or momentum. Grid girls come first for no apparent reason, followed by a not very well targeted shot of any old rear wheel pulling away, and it finishes with a randomly grinning Lewis who you’d only know was even in ‘celebratory’ poise if you were aware of the footage already (immediately post-Brazil, I believe?)… and that’s before we consider the oft-mentioned overpersistent and lazily applied yellow stripes, which, again, just look like some kind of little ditty somebody’s quickly put together in the university library. Just look at that “Grand Prix” titling as well. It’s as photoshopped as they come.

Still, I wait with baited breath the treatment the BBC opt to take with this one. How often do you get such a hotly-anticipated… INTRO?!

well I think it is a great effort personally.

However , and there is always a however , I think if he had access to better stock footage it would look a lot better , I believe there is a second version now on youtube , which I think is a little weaker than the first, I would not say not as good as they are both very good pieces of work in thier own right.

In relation to the discusssion on theme music , well there should be no discussion, I hope the top gear team (mainly Mr Clarkson) has been putting in his large boot to make sure this happens, as he is the face (and name) of the most highly viewed motoring show and thus should his voice be heard in the rounded corridors of auntie’s house then it may well be worth its weight in fuel…

This is brilliant. Actually the BBC should give this guy his just rewards and pay him to use it! And if they don’t keep the chain I may stop paying my TV licence, it’s what F1 always should have been.

Oh, and to the guy who said the was just an updated copy of the “1999 Season RTE Formula One” in Ireland, are you not missing the fact that they have obviously just copied the BBC anyway, who used that song as long ago as between 20 and 30 years, I remember it as a kid.

I soooo hope they use the chain, it would bring in loads of fans that have left the sport over the last few years.

I don’t think they need a fresh idea or anything they need to revert back to when F1 was loved by many and try to shake down the current image F1 has.

Go back to sliks – excellent move

Nick (7) and Steve (25), you must realise that you are in a teeny weeny minority wanting to keep that torturous “Lift me up” noise that USED to eminate from our TVs.
“HEY DUDE” Kula Shaker is a good contender. Check it out and close your eyes while the track builds up, imagining the cars bulletting off the start when the music bursts into action. Oh yes!

This piece of music is synonymus with F1 and the mere fact that people are reporting goosebumps is why this track ought to be taken on board for the BBC’s coverage of the new 2009 F1 season. Anything else is most likely to disappoint the majority of F1 fans out there, and why would the BBC want to deliberately do that to people who pay for it’s existence.

Do the right thing BBC, listen to the people and give us an F1 coverage that is innovative and fresh, but don’t forget thats its just as important to draw on those aural memories that we all remember with great fondness (and by that i don’t mean the ITV theme tune).

Not using the Chain would be like dropping the MOTD music when they got it back from ITV. It simply can’t be done. Refresh the broadcast approach, sure, I look forward to seeing what they’ve done, but if I get up at 7am to watch the first race and am not rewarded with a healthy amount of goosebumps, I, and millions of others, will be more than disappointed!
