There’s not a lot more to be said about BMW’s F1.09 other than what Bill Thomas spoke about when we looked at it testing back in November. It’s ugly. It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t have those massive shoe box end plates on the front wing.
Those end plates remind me of a section of steel girder, which makes me think ‘heavy,’ when I look at it. Not good for an F1 car. Bill doesn’t think that these can actually be the real plates mind you, so we’ll have to wait and see (I think they are).
Other than that, and the ungainly looking wing mirrors, it all looks quite tidy. We know BMW have been focusing on this car for a lot longer than their championship rivals, so it will be interesting indeed to see if they are ahead, and if so by how much.
The McLaren is still doing it for me the most, although if that Williams rolls out in Melbourne looking as cooly understated as it does right now in its interim livery then the MP4-24 might take a knock.
Saying all that, the Renault is getting better looking on me, cos I like how retro those red end plates make it look.
So anyway, the battle in the looks department is really heating up – come on, it’s not like we’ve got anything else to go on right now – and if good looking cars really do go faster, then this F1.09 from BMW will be nowhere come the end of the season.
