Aussie rules, at last…

He’s done it. After 35,000 years in Formula 1, Mark Webber has finally been able to ditch his Unluckiest Driver in F1 tag to win his first race, at the German GP.

Even a controversial drive-through penalty, meted out for a first corner collision with Rubens Barrichello, couldn’t hold him back from his dream.

Team-mate Sebastian Vettel finished second, with Massa steering home his Ferrari to an uncharacteristic (for this season at least) third.

The Brawns of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello finished fifth and sixth respectively – and Rubens was furious after the race, appearing to believe that the team stitched him up to put Button ahead of him on-track.

Button hangs on to his world championship lead with 68 points (see the full table at BBC Sport’s F1 website), but Vettel and Webber have both pushed past Barrichello in the drivers’ standings.

Vettel is now 21 points behind Jenson, with team-mate Webber just 1.5 points further down the table and Barrichello a further 1.5 points behind.

And what about Lewis? It looked to be going so well at the Nurburgring in his upgraded McLaren, all the way up until the first corner.

After a mega aggressive, KERS-assisted start, Hamilton and Webber banged wheels, resulting in a punctured McLaren that circled the rest of the race at the back.

But the biggest disappointment came when Adrian Sutil – in ‘back markers’ Force India, don’t forget – exited the pits after running up in second place, and had a ‘racing incident’ with Kimi Raikkonen.

Sutil punctured, and dropped to the back of the grid after a nose change. It hurt more because it smacked of Monaco last year, when Kimi smashed Sutil off the track.

What do you think – someone’s fault or, as Kimi put it, a racing incident?

Either way, the day remains Webber’s, and I don’t think anyone’s disappointed for him – it’s Australia’s finest hour in F1 since the Minogue sisters were last on the grid…

Joe T name a single thing that Webber has complained about in the last two years. The guys’ one of the most down to earth, hard working and professional drivers in F1 today, the respect he gets from other drivers is testament to that.

Well done Webber, was really happy for you, and yeah, take that doubters!

Well done Mark, great race and fantastic celebration, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer. He needs to follow it up with more wins, particularly while the Red Bull is so strong.

I wonder do any of the drivers actually watch the race after? If they did we might have some different accounts of what happened. I don’t think Rubens was stitched up, he’s getting paranoid now. His race was ruined behind Massa, not by a botched pit stop. Kimi should have given Sutil more room. It’s a difficult corner to squeeze two cars around and Kimi could have passed later in the lap.

Good to see someone else win, although i’d still rather see Button at the top! Webber is a worthy winner.

But shame for Hamilton, could have done soo well :(

But i think Sutil should just make sure he stays away from the Ferrari of Raikonen: he always finds a way to hit him!!

Sutil was hit by Ferrari, he didn’t hit Ferrari. Kimi and Massa seem to have it in for him over the last few seasons and it’s getting tedious. I think Kimi saying it was a racing incident is taking the p@*s and he should hold his hands up and say sorry, I ruined your race, your teams race and the best chance of Force India getting points.

F1 will be a better place without Kimi.

I think that webber is good but not so much and i think that 50% of the drivers in F1 are better than Button he is just a… he is nothing no adrenaline no show nothing he just drive from the beginning of the season he has only 3 own passes after he went to the pit and than went out 13 i think. he is not a champion for me he is just lucky :P to be in brown i think that alonso vetel are 3 times better than him after Shumi is gone now i like Alonso and Vetel i wold be happy to see them in Ferrari after year or 2

Actually Joe, it was Sebastien Vettel who crashed into him under the Safety Car, and it was Japan, not China. And damn right he was furious, what kind of idiot manages to crash into someone under Safety Car conditions? Vettel himself has admitted as much.

Its plain to see that Raikkonen did get in his way, cruising about on his out lap on the racing line.

You’re reaching there.

MARK WEBBER DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN THAT RACE AFTER WHAT HE DID TO RUBENS AND I BELEIVE THAT IT WAS ENTIRELY SUTIL FAULT KIMI WAS GOING ROUND THE OUTSIDE WHEN SUTIL JUST UNDERSTEERD (WHEN HE COULD OF QUITE EASILY GONE ROUND THE INSIDE) STRAIGHT INTO KIMI

And with that, Tom Evans, you win the Stupid Post of the Day award – all in caps, no punctuation and lousy spelling. Please return to the blog when you’ve found a brain that works.

about kimi coming in webbers way at silverstone qualifying, it was webber who caught kimi at the wrong time, because on that turn there was no where for kimi to go. webber is a bit like hamilton, the difference being he does not feel “gutted” at every oppurtunity, and is generally a nicer guy.

^^^ And has been racing for over 8 years and done serious time in some rubbish teams to get where he is now, compared to golden boy Hamilton. Which is probably why he takes things going wrong pretty well.

Joe T, thats the example you come up? Over two years ago, when he was an almost guaranteed second, which would have given Red Bull its first podium spot, and Vettel runs straight up the back of him during a safety car period, ruining both their races, and in his frustration swears about Vettel, and thats whinging? Mate, its not whinging when its true. I have no more time for you, you are just a miserable spanker.
