He’s back!

Michael Schumacher is all set to make a Formula One comeback at the Euro GP in three weeks.

Schumacher has agreed with Ferrari bosses to replace the injured Felipe Massa, providing the seven-time world champion is declared race fit.

Michael had a motorbike accident earlier in the year, so Ferrari want to check there aren’t any physical problems before officially announcing him and getting him in the F60.

A car he hasn’t ever driven, and due to the testing ban this year, one he won’t drive until Friday practice in Valencia.

A day that we’re already looking forward to, as are many of you, and no doubt so are many of the drivers.

Lewis Hamilton has said in the past that Michael is an idol of his, and he always wanted to race against the Ferrari legend.

Now it looks like he’ll get his chance.

One man who probably isn’t looking forward to Big Schu’s return though, is fellow Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen.

Imagine if the German steps into the car and destroys Kimi’s lap times straight off the bat?

That will not look good for the Finn.

But anyway, what do you think’s going to happen?

One thing looks likely at least, and that is Schumacher closong out the season with Ferrari, while Felipe recovers.

And Michael’s been known to be quite handy when it comes to developing a car and squeezing every 100th out of it…

There are plenty of good young drivers who should be given the chance.

This is just cynical manipulation by Ferrari of the constructors championship.

Hope Filipé Massa is better soon & regains his seat.

Let’s be realistic, I think he will do adequately, but will feel his injury, age and lack of experience with the F60. He still will be quick, he IS a legend after all. But what will the press say if he writes off a car two in a few weeks time? Even Lance Armstrong could not win the Tour this year..

I hope though that he destroys all competition. And the Stig stunt proves that Germans can have a sense of humour after all ;-)

@13 Stig is free, the TG-season has ended. That’s why this season is so short: ‘They say he is clairvoyant for opportunities to drive Ferraris. They also say he is faster in F1 than Finnish drivers that like rallying.’ Except for Mika, once or twice ;)
One problem: these days F1-drivers are obliged to give interviews. Even Kimi is better at that than the Stig.

Interesting to see how much he can get out of the car, and it should at the very least make Kimi drive out of his skin so he doesn’t get embarassed.

I don’t think people will get the Schumacher v Hamilton race they expect though, as the McLaren is ahead of the Ferrari at the moment and they’ve both stopped developing for this year now (apparently).

Still, its fantastic for the sport, regardless of the circumstances that have led to his return, and as for Ferrari, he’s probably still the best they could get for helping them solve the problems of this dog of a car. If testing was allowed I’ve no doubt he’d have been living at Fiorano or Maranello in order to get the car to the head of pack again.

    Brilliant brilliant news though!

I am fit to bursting with excitement. Question to every one. He cannot drive the F60 until spain because of the testing ban but presumably Ferrari could hire out Mugello and have Michael lapping an F2008 constantly for ‘exhibition/ demonstration’ over the next few weeks. Would this be allowed in the rules?

    How is testing defined?

I think we all need to keep in mind that Michael hasn’t driven a F1 car for three odd years, and that in F1 terms is donkey years!

That said, I am excited to watch Michael take to the track again. I don’t expect him to be as fast as the leading pack out the gate but I’m sure that as long as he stays fit, he should manage to get a result or too.

What is important is we done forget about Massa, I pray he gets well soon and that he is in good shape, after all, he has to be a daddy in a few months.

i dt think tat mshumy is the real stig tho, it was a gag or a joke of somesort in order to increase ratings, if it was him, why is he still driving with his helmet and not showing his face? and some bbc person said that it is a gag..
anyway, it will be a fantastic season to come, since shumy was winnin earlier coz all the others cars were rubbish, but now, we got the redbulls, the brawns(maybe), toyotas and williams also a bit competitive, mclarens and the ferraris, and it will be a city circuit, something shumacher has not raced on..
we need to wait and see, the last gp was exciting, coz we are starting to see a mixed startup line, now we will see one with shumacher in it.. hopefully fair play and no accidents.

Schumy has always kept his hand in (or should that be foot)at Ferrari so he may not be as far behind as people are expecting. He is massively instrumental within Ferrari, in terms of the development of the both road & race cars so hopefully he can still deliver in for a full F1 race. But it will be great to see him return whatever the result. I can imagine Raikkonen will not be best pleased – oh well, how would we know its not like the Iceman shows much emotion either way :) As long as Massa makes a full recovery everyone will be happy. Best Wishes to Felipe.

(Senna is dead, remember) noone even comes close. in my opinion he is going to get back in shape quick, probably not do anything special in Spain… but he will without a shadow of a doubt kick Kimi’s ass at SPA (Sch. favorite track) and continue doing so for the rest of the season. at the end Kimi gets fired from Ferrari and Alonso will take his place. Schumi will make at least 45 points this season.

I’m cautious but it’s truly a great moment to make a comeback. To do so for his own glory would be stupid he has nothing left to prove. But now he does it to “help Ferrari out” so it’s not the worst thing if he’s not blistering. If he would do if for himself it would be an uberfail if he’s slow. And if he is fast, well that would be just as cool as if it was an ego comeback. I don’t think he’s not fit though. Racing motorcycles isn’t a walk in the park. I just think he should familiarise himself with an F1 car again and train his neck muscles. Racing an F2008 on Mugello would do the trick for the most part I presume…

This will be race everyone will want to be at. The legend that Micheal Schumacher vs the young pretender that is lewis hamlition. This could be one biggest let down ever but it could be the race of decade and that would not be a bad thing at all for the sport. But button could still have a chance of winning because he has got brawn factor. So it will be to brits v the legender german.

Micheal will own Lewis anytime, I wasn’t and still not a fan of both drivers but it’d be really nice to see Micheal back behind the wheel. Give me Micheal to Lewis any day of the week, at least Micheal worked his way into F1 rather than handed to him.

All we need now is Damon Hill back behind the wheel & racing against Micheal like the good old days.

This is brilliant with shuey back not only will ferrari have the advantage of his expertise but kimi dosn’t like shuey so it will spur him on as well. just picture what spa will be like. also with schuey ferrari can use him to get help with next years car. don’t expect anything speacial in quali and practice but with kers and hopefully an inspired kimi ferrari can take the fight to brawn and red bull it’ll make no deference but at least it’ll be the final hurra from the worlds fastest german.

which reminds me i reckon he’ll blow vettel off the track he has already said he’s surprised by shumis decision which tranlates into english as ‘i’ve just wet myself i’m so scared.

Schuey was worried about his reputation, saying that everyone will expect him to win by miles and if he doesn’t he’ll be declared as a shit driver. But all the fans know that he’s not raced in F1 for a few years, he’ll barely be fit enough, he’s a 40 year old man and all we really care about is that he’s a living breathing motorsport legend.

Win or lose, Schuey, the fans will love you for this. Don’t worry about that. :)

Personally, I can’t be bothered to get into the whole blahblah is better than blahblahblah – i’m just going to sit back and watch the rest of the season with a big smile on my face because we have maybe half a dozen potential winners in a dry race (depending on which cars suit which tracks best) and all the drivers will have something to prove against Michael Schumacher – let the games begin!! :)

Even if he underperforms, I doubt it’s going to do much if any damage to his status. He is one of the most successful drives, if not the most successful driver of all time, and nothing is gonna change that.

I think it’s unrealistic to expect him to win races. It is possible, but Ferrari hasn’t got a winning car. People are taking this too seriously. Perhaps the guy just want to come back and play for a few races.

The ticket sales will sky rocket, I expect capacity crowd from the race in Valencia.

As great as Schumacher is he’s still driving a crippled Ferrari, a fact that must be taken into consideration with any expectations felt towards his performance.
No doubt he’ll try and get as much from the car as possible can in the freakishly short amount of time he’s given. Being 40, has never driven the F60 and has been absent from F1 competition in three years, I’m going to be more reserved here and say that a points finish is definitely in the cards. A podium is very possible and a win is too ambitious at this point.

But Schumi is definitely a boost to the sport and all eyes will be on Ferrari.

I’m excited to see how he gets on after being away from F1 for so long. No matter his results in the race or who passes him etc. etc. It will never take away from his legend status. He has nothing to prove.

Do you think Schumacher got a sweet deal? More than just a Fiat? Do you think Ferrari kissed the Pope’s ring for this? Ferrari may have spent half of next year’s racing budget already, and it might be worth it.

Schumacher had a deal with Mercedes before the F1 days. It would be funny if Schumacher would beat Kimi in a McLaren. In a parallel universe. Lots of that in StarTrek.

A lot of you are really optimistic about this comeback, but keep in mind that he hasn’t raced an F1 car for more than three years, and that the cars have had major changes done to them since schumi’s era ended. Changed aerodynamics, kers, smaller engines, new tyre rules and all the other changes. Racing is not how it was three years ago, and there can be no doubt that even though he is a legend in F1, he will be struggling. the f60 is not as strong compared to the rest of the grid as it was when he was driving, it will be interesting to see how he’s gonna perform in a weaker car. But I sincerely believe Hamilton and the red bulls will beat him. Brawn too if they get their issues with the tyres sorted.

McLaren was always able to make kimi the car he wanted to drive, Ferrari still hasn’t. And this will be bad for him, since Schumi’s driving style is totally different, he will totally make the car behave different from what kimi likes (’cause of his influence in the team).

Looking so much forward towards spa, schumis AND kimis favourite track. Kimi has dominated spa for several years now, the fight there will be to the death!

Well, If Schuhmi could pull it off, and win, well, that’d be cool for him. But if he can’t finish in the points, That’d be a shoe-in for the FOTA, to get that testing-ban lifted.(or at least a paragraph added, for replacement drivers)
If this Fezza is any good, Schuhmi will squeeze every last ounce of performance out of it.And definitly finish within the top 8. I wouldn’t bet my money on a win.But he could end up on podium, if he won’t break down.Sure, Michael has read all the data from the car, but Kimi has the advantage ,to have actually experienced, what the car is like to drive. Considering their difference in experience and Driving abilities, i’d say, they’re pretty equal in terms of speed at Valencia. But from then on,MS will dominate his teammate. What i am wondering is: how will he get it on against the Brawns? Its kinda funny to see him driving against Rubens(his former teammate, in a car, built by his former chief engineer). ISN’T IT IRONIC?

This is just absolutely amazing! Michael Schumacher returns to F1 for possibly the rest of the season, this is sure to mix things up a lil down on the grid. I can see it now . . Lewis Hamilton battling for the win against his idol and the most famous racing driver of all time, intense stuff. As for Brawn, what a kick in the bollocks, just when Button thought this season couldn’t start turning any worse on him and now Schumi gets thrown into the equation. This will make great tv! I will not be leaving my couch for the majority of that weekend!

Here in Belgium the pile of unsold tickets for the coming Spa GP are practically all sold. Within 18 hours they sold more tickets than in all the months before due to the announcement of Schumi’s comeback. That says enough about the importance of Schumi for F1. Is he the most important and greatest of the pack? Yes he is.

@165 Quote: “As for Brawn, what a kick in the bollocks, just when Button thought this season couldn’t start turning any worse on him and now Schumi gets thrown into the equation.”

I agree that it doesn’t look good for Brawn regarding constructor’s points BUT as for Button, as long as he picks up a handful of points at most races then Schumacher will actually be a help – he’ll be another driver to potentially take points away from the Red Bulls. He’s laughing!!

So the real pressure will be on Seb Vettel and Mark Webber – not only do they need to try and win every race to stand a chance at the driver’s championship, they now have to worry about a rejuvenated Mclaren/Hamilton, Alonso, Brawns and also a certain angry red Ferrari in their mirrors (if they are in front to begin with!)…and don’t forget Kimi, he’ll want to beat Schumacher. So for Button…he can just sit back and drive smoothly and consistantly and it won’t be hard. Hope i’m wrong :)

RTL figured out that Schumi even has a chance of winning the championship. Button has to score zero points from now on for that, and the runners up have to be modest. If so, Button and Schumi’d both have 70 pts, Schumi 7 against Button 6 wins. I didn’t check, is RTL right?
If Button continues to finish so far behind the RB’s he’s in trouble.

Button will win. Don’t forget that Button’s got Ross Brawn, which was a part, however big or small, of the Schumacher winning streak.

Some people were saying Hamilton deserved the win this past weekend, cuz he has had such a difficult year. That is such rubbish. If that’s your measure of who’s deserving, most drivers have been struggling for years (Button for one), and they certainly deserve a win.

And like I said before, Schumacher’s comeback is being totally overhyped. Someone was writing that Schumacher will be threatening Button and Vettel for the title? Yes, he is a legend, and if anyone could do it, it’d be him. However, the Ferrari car has not been that competitive this year. And we’re not talking about child play here. This is a highly competitive sport. Some are acting like he’ll be racing against some barbie dolls.

Anyway, like most, I’m hoping for an exciting race, but I won’t get too excited until the guys delivers a deserving drive.

And @136- just because Schuey is wearing the trademark white suit, doesn’t mean jack. You could put anyone in the suit and call them The Stig.

Come on guys, Schumacher being the Stig is a publicity stunt, but then again you’ll never know. Anyway, looking forward to Valencia. He’s, there is no reasonable doubt, on eof the best dirvers in the world if not the best. So, even if he’s not driven that car or the track he’ll adjust to that. He’ll squeeze the best out of that Ferrari. Where that leads him, we’ll have to wait and see. A podium finish would be nice, a win would be awesome and extremely embarrassing for the rest of the field. Can’t wait

gerhard berger once said that after he climbed into the benetton that schuey left after going to ferrari, the car is handled very differently from what he is accustomed to. so it stands to reason that schuey could have either some difficulty driving a car that suited massa’s feel or he could develop it to suit his driving style. . . this will prove once and for all his genius. . . in driving a car that was setup not for him and driving it at or near the head of the field. . . if he suceeds, it will definitely etch his legend in granite. . .

Knew when Massa was injured they would turn to Schumacher.
Anybody who thinks he is ring rusty, think again.
Schumi helped develop the F1 car and knows everything about it.
He has remained fit and it will not be a problem to catch up with the newbies.

I’m so pleased that Schumy’s coming back and really hope we get a good race – it’s a long time since we’ve heard the German Anthem followed by the Italian – they were like verses one and two of the F1 Anthem.

On a serious note – what about poor Luca Badoer the Ferrari test driver. Normally he would be the natural choice to take the drive. I wonder if Kimi’s fabulous performance in Hungary prompted Ferrari to play their trump card. They could still save something out of the season, and if they hadn’t played Schumy they could have been accused of making the wrong decision later on.

I’m so looking forward to Valencia. Good luck Felipe – hope everything works out for him. He’s a fine driver and seems a really nice person.

Having said all of that, COME ON LEWIS!!

I wonder how Schumacher will solve the money issue. He _is_ a (very well?) paid consultant to Ferrari, but i guess he still will have to ask for “combat pay” for doing any racing, otherwise he would spoil the prices for the other drivers. But he can’t be seen to profit from Massas missfortune and pain, that would be the end of his – allready slightly stained – image.

I would suggest he gives all the proceedings from his races as substitute to a charity of his and Massas choosing. That would set a nice tone to this whole unfortunate affair. Maybe Bernie can be coaxed into also giving a dollar for each dollar Schumi gives. Michaels F1 return will fill Ecclestones coffers to the point of bursting, so he might need to relieve the pressure a bit :-)
