Michael Schumacher insisted he was happy with a top-six finish on his return to F1 competition in Bahrain, declaring that the result was a ‘good base to make progress’ for the Mercedes GP team.
In his first F1 outing since the 2006 season finale, Schumacher enjoyed a steady – if unspectacular run – to sixth place and the seven-time champion insisted he was happy with the result and the base it has given the team for the remainder of the season.
“After three years away, I’m happy to say that I had fun out there, especially at the beginning with the good start that I had,” he said. “I can live very well with sixth position, and it gives both me and the team a good base to make progress. I have every confidence that we will improve the car.
“Working with the team for our first race together was very positive and the guys did a great job so I would like to thank them for their support in my comeback race. We all know that we have some way to go but we will get there. The season is long.”
However, speaking to the BBC following the race, Schumacher admitted that the rules for 2010 and strategies employed by teams – which saw the leading runners complete just one stop – had ensured that the event wasn’t one that will be regarded as a classic.
“Overtaking is basically impossible, other than if somebody makes a mistake,” he said. “Lewis had a little one so Nico was able to pass him, but got back past at the pitstop. That’s about it.
“That’s the action we are going to have with unfortunately this kind of environment of race strategy.”

What do you think?

come on guys shumi backs after years, great to see he’s in top 10 and standing at number 6 position.
F1 is a complete team game, each n every person have to do his 200% best to take those great cars on race tracks. Its just a new start with Mercedes Benz GP.

I’m a Schumi fan and there’s no doubt that his driving ability had a great deal to do with his incredible sucess. However, I think we can all agree that Ross Brawn is probably just as important (possibly more so) than schumi’s driving skill. Just look at 2009, it was mostly Brawn and very little Button that won that championship. He’s a brilliant strategist.

I find this races boring as hell. The point of watching a car race is often to catch the disasters and see some cool looking cars. The race is so tight it doesn’t have much entertainment value.

Alonso showing Schumi how it was done in that boring race just like he did in 2005 and 2006.
I think Schumis record of 7 champs will be beaten by Alonso eventually hopefully with out using dirty tactics.
Rosberg beat Schumi HA! Its going to be like that all year and his reputation will be crushed.

I think that Schumacher did well on his first race in Bahrain finishing 6th, as the season goes on he should gain more confidence and start winning races and possibly the championship, who knows? Remember this is only race 1 of 19.

The first comment beats “yey, first comment!!!” The car won, not Schumacher. Some say that it was actually Ralph that was driving that Ferrari.

I tell you what you McLaren fans have a massive chip on your shoulder…Because he wasn’t a sportsman he’s not the greatest driver. Hes not the greatest sportsman but he IS the greatest driver. I’d love to see what it would be like if he drove for McLaren, whether any of you pig-headed pricks would like him then. Pretty sure McLaren have cheated in their days like the double brake, lie gate amongst others which i’m sure there are.

Seriously, anyone criticising Schumacher for not winning is crazy. To come 6th after 3 years off the sport is incredible. Give him a few more rounds to get the most out of the car, and he’ll be a contender.

I agree with Tom. I still think if Ross Brawn improves the car Rosberg will be first in there and will win his first race.

If Ross Brawn and Rory Bryne had stayed with Benetton, Ferrari would not have won anything since, and it would be 31 years since Ferrari’s last driver’s title… {Jody Scheckter won in 1979.}

I think Schumacher’s 6th place was very respectable for his first race back after 3 yeara with a car/set-up that doesn’t quite suit hia style of driving – I think alot of people underestimate this achievement.I expect him to very slowly chip away at Rosberg’s half-second advantage and possibly be on equal terms or there-abouts within 3 or 4 races.
I think people also forget that Nico Rosberg is considered by many to be one of the best drivers on the grid and he’s just about in his prime now,so I don’t think it’s such a disgrace that Schumacher finds himself a little slower at this stage.

i thought the race was rubbish, after the first 3-5 laps of the race thats it over, cause there are no overtakes after that…f1 should go back to classic mode, like when mansell used to trick people when he was overtakin, now thats seen as a risk? F1 should be about competition, not just driving in circles around a circuit and hoping that someone makes a mistake so you can get past…F1 is a big joke now and its getting worse every year, and i believe im not alone on that point!
