- Monaco GP: the Top Gear preview
Tomorrow morning then, the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, the atypical, anachronistic antidote to all Bernie’s new world circuits kicks off and, almost despite ourselves, we are quite extraordinarily excited. So the cars travel more slowly than anywhere else in the world (30mph around the hairpin); so overtaking is rarer than a shirt buttoned anywhere above […]
- Coming up: Monaco, Indy 500 and Le Mans… Give us your predictions!
For those of a petrol-y persuasion midsummer means only one thing: the Holy Trinity of Motor Sport. Monaco, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Only one driver, Graham Hill, has won all three of the world’s greatest races and, with Monaco and the Indy invariably now on the same weekend — […]
- We catch up with Robert Kubica
Robert Kubica has spent his life driving things quickly. He is the first Polish driver ever to compete in F1. In 2006 he was promoted from test driver to race driver for BMW Sauber, and continued to drive for them till 2009. In June 2008, he won his first F1 victory at the Canadian Grand […]
- Honda returns to F1 with McLaren
So McLaren have opted for the ‘let’s put the band back together’ route out of its current malaise with confirmation that, from 2015 onwards, it will once again be McLaren-Honda. It’s not been any secret that Honda, irresistibly drawn to the new 1.6-litre turbo engine formula due next season, were looking for a return to […]

I don’t call it a conspiracy, but you know Red Bull doesn’t want Webber to win anything. They want Vettel to win it all. Why? You see, neither of those guys, or any serious athletes would drink Red Bull, but Vettel LOOKS like the sort of young-ish skater dude who MAY actually chug a can of sugar filled energy drink, while Webber doesn’t. Webber winning anything doesn’t contribute to the global image of Red Bull, while Vettel just fits the image right, great for promotion. There’s a rumor that Red Bull wants Kimi the Iceman back to F1, for the same reason, Kimi sure looks like a sort of guy who’d have Red Bull in his fridge, along with a case of Vodka. So you see, Webber’s screwed.

@konsf1
vettel could have gone a bit further before turning into mark’s part of the road or he could have just waited until he got to the corner then he would have been on the inside anyway that way he would have got past mark WITHOUT crashing into him.
you CAN’T blame this on one driver webber gave space vettel turned into him but maybe webber should of defended his position a bit better.

I wonder how many people side with Webber merely cause Vettel is German.
I am not saying that Vettel is not too blame, but almost every second comment on here compares Sebastian to Schumacher, almost avoiding the acutal argument and focusing on the nationality of the racer, basing the reason for the incident on the fact that Vettel is German.
After all folks, Schumacher is German as is Vettel, thus he is to blame.

Oh and one final comment; as Horner now admitted, Webber asked for Vettel to back off, who refused to because of Jenson and Lewis catching up quite quickly.
If Webber was so concerned about a 1,2 finish he should have not entered fuel saving mode, or gave way to a quicker Vettel.

Having watched the video several times, I think the majority of the blame lies with Vettel. There was an overtaking opportunity that he tried to take, but I think he moved right too early and hit Webber. Maybe he saw the corner and thought that if he remained on the same line he wouldn’t be able to make the turn without running wide, allowing Webber back through.
I think this was largely down to Vettel’s inexperience and slight “gung-ho” attitude – maybe he thinks that his Red Bull is faster than everything else, but he should be a bit more patient and a bit more circumspect in the future. There’s a long way to go yet

Vettel could have held off the Mclarens easy so this talk of “oh the mclarens were coming for Vettel and would have taken them” is utter BS because then they would have taken Webber as well, sure he has every right to try the move but at what cost? He did a poor move, Webber left plenty of room Vettel tried to make more and failed. Cue, big crying from Vettel, what a sook. Don’t cry because your version of overtaking involves forcing other drivers off the road or to brake suddenly to avoid an accident with you and when they don’t you suffer the consequences. Toughen up princess.

I’m no Webber fan but notice at the beginning of the season when Vettel was faster he would say “I tried but Seb is too good” and now in the 2nd half Vettel is all “oh the car’s crap” when he’s been outclassed in qualifying and race pace. Boot him out, put Kubica in at least he’s got talent and doesn’t just blame others.

Vettel was completely at fault for turning into Mark. Seb would have had the inside line for the upcoming corner where Mark would have had to give him room but Seb would have had to brake earlier and they could have raced wheel to wheel without wrecking. For Vettel to assume that Mark should just move over when racing for the lead, teammates or not, seems ridiculous. Hamilton and Button were able to race wheel to wheel without turning into one another.

its mark i feel, no front running driver will give the inside line to the driver who is overtaking him, webber gussed vettle will go outside but fautered giving the inside line to vettle and when he understood his mistake leaved no room to vettle when he had the whole track to go right.

most certainly vettel! he tried to pull a similar move on hamilton at the beginning of the race and tht did not stick either. he clearly realized he did not have enough space to brake and mark webber was more than generous to have given him so much space

the whole teams fault.
watch the highlights on formula1.com and you will see that vettel is told to use the overtake button if needed, no one told webber so he went defensive and tried to cover the left without being dangerous, vettel then tried to intimidate mark and got it wrong.
christian horner needs a punch in the face for not telling mark that vettel would most likely overtake him.

the rear wheel did touch the grass but this was because seb and mark had touched, i wonder if this will cause future convlict and cost red bull a championship like maclaren in 07 i hope not because it was a very exsiting grand prix, to see 4 car’s, 2 teams inside 3 seconds for most of the race was amazing i just wished that the crash didn’t happon and a fair result of the grand prix stood but the maclarens looked like they now have the upper hand!!

Vettel was clearly ahead, by about half a car’s length. A left hand corner was coming up very soon. If both Red Bulls didn’t get over to the racing line on the right Hamilton would have passed them exiting the lefthander. Mark Webber should have moved right as soon as Vettel was alongside, for both their sakes. Mark was at fault. Vettel’s only mistake was to presume that a driver of Webber’s experience would do the right thing for himself and the team.

Why do all you supporting Vettel talk about how Webber should have moved over and he wasn’t on the racing line> believe it or not you can use all the track. If you want to overtake its your job to get it done not the the bloke in fronts job to help you. If you are half a length in front that is not job done, you have no right to turn, Webber has every right to maintain his line. Not a Webber fan but 100% Vettel, come on Jenson

Vettel paid the price for too much aggression. And karma will catch up with him. The planets have aligned for MW and SV will continue to DNF until he grows up. It has never been the perfect partnership at RedBull but Mark’s experience (and professional team approach) will pay dividends in 2010. This incident (coupled with the Fuji one) and other brain-fades by SV will ultimately see him poorly reputed despite his talent. I think he’ll be world champ in time but only warmly welcomed in Germany. If and when MW is crowned (2010?) it will be warmly received in Australia, internationally and in the sport after so much effort and struggle for two decades. Brabham, Jones, Webber. Go hard Mark and give no measure to the ‘silver spoon’ brigade of SV, LH and MS. I actually would have liked to see him at Scuderia with FA!
