Button picks up MBE

Jenson Button has received his MBE from the Queen in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The McLaren driver was handed the award after securing his maiden F1 title last season with Brawn GP, with the ceremony coming just days after he finished behind Lewis Hamilton in a British 1-2 at the Turkish GP.

“The last 18 months have been an incredible period in my life,” said Button. “Starting last year facing almost impossible odds, I achieved my childhood dream of winning the Formula One world championship and I’m now driving for one of the greatest teams in the sport.

“Today makes me incredibly proud to be British, and to be able represent my country on the world’s stage.”

Thats why he didn’t get sports personality of the year, because he was on for an MBE. I think Jenson will take the title this year too.

Well done to Jensen Button! brilliant year! just the icing on top of the cake. I hope he makes it back to back this year! fingers crossed! I know who I am cheering for with MCLAREN! going to annoy alot now, but can’t stand Hamilton and don’t think he is a role model for any upcoming british racing driver! the man comes into F1 starts making money & decides he can’t stand all the “celebrity & press” and moves abroad! me thinks it was more to do with paying taxes. then he blames his team for his crap driving & to top it off he hoons in his car in Oz. mans a plonker!

Mark Webber will be Prime Minister of Australia when he wins the title this year let alone MBE from the Queen. Stig’s better driver than Jenson

yeh, lets all bum jenson button, someone who had a wealthy father to let him go karting, and the funding to get into F1. don’t you just love a riches to riches story.

yeah, he deserves it more than anyone else working in the public sector! he’s done so much for britain! oh no wait, what has he done exactly?

@ Ed

im not a hamilton fan, but i dont know how you can lambaste someone for moving to a country to pay lower taxes. ….seems pretty logical to me. if he wants to get away from the press, he has every right to – how is that getting to you?

im not a hamilton fan for the following reasons:
hes always been in top equipment from the beginning of his career
doesnt have a cool head when the driving requires some sort of brain to make decisions
100% relies on the team to think and nanny him
inability to adapt style to save tyres

all reasons why he’ll never be a multiple world champion. but moving to switzerland to benefit from lower taxes and a quieter lifestyle? i can’t fault him for that.

Button is good but boring to watch, Hamilton is much more exciting and is clearly the better driver

@18: lol! exactly :D Anyway, for me, this award is about as relevent as the British monarchy is in the moderen world..ie not at all :)) An MBE is just a patronising pat on the back for celebrities who have a achieved a certain amount of fame – it’s only a matter of time before reality tv contestants start receiving them.. Anyway, erm, well done Jenson but I can’t get overexcited by a moderately successful spoilt F1 driver with the personality, charm and charisma of wood veneer.. we need the likes of Rossi and Loeb in F1 ;)
