Nico Hulkenberg upset the remaining F1 championship contenders by claiming Williams’ first pole position in five years ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
The German, whose seat remains under threat for 2010, posted two laps better than anyone else could manage in the ten-minute shoot-out, after each of the contenders switched to slicks for their final assault on top spot.
Hulkenberg’s timing was best of all, first moving to provisional pole with enough time for a couple more flying laps where the rest of the field had just one.
In the end, however, he didn’t need the third effort, but used it to further lower the target time to 1min 14.470secs, opening out a gap of 1.1secs over countryman Sebastian Vettel.
The championship contenders were headed by the Red Bull drivers in second and third, after Fernando Alonso’s bid withered into fifth spot, behind McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. The inside line has a slight advantage at Interlagos, however, suggesting Webber and Alonso are not too badly off.
Rubens Barrichello put the second Williams into sixth place, ahead of Robert Kubica, Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa and Vitaly Petrov.

If there is one man who can upset Alonsos chance to take the crown at Interlagos it’s Webber. He will have the opportunity to hold up the championship leader for a few laps while the others open up a gap .However this could play into the hands of both Hamilton and Vettel. To make it a really great final race it would be great to see the top 6 finish in this order.Vettel,W ebber,Kubica,Hamilton,Bar richelo,Schumacher.Alonso will crack under pressure and finish 7th or 8th.

he stunned everyone, 1 second faster, however what i found most interesting is that he did 35 laps , 8 and 7 laps more than vettel and webber.
what i am saying is that hulkenberg saw an opputunity, took it and succeeded, good on him.

Exciting ingredients for the race today!
This is Alonso`s year, he is the best overall package, which always has to include reliability.
WOW Hulk – where did that come from? That was from another star….. considering that Barrichello managed just 7th
And he might not get a seat, because he will not bring bags of cash to the team.

This just shows that F1 is a team sport. Most of these drivers are world class. It would be interesting all of them turn a few laps in one car. Invite them all to take a few laps around the Top Gear track
