Schumacher fastest in Monaco qualifying

So weren’t we just saying a returning champion would be the driver to watch at Monaco this weekend? Admittedly we did have our eye on Kimi Raikkonen, but the sentiment was correct; it was always going to take an extra brush of class to edge pole at Monaco in this, the closest season in 30 years.

But Michael Schumacher? When he has made Q3 this year he’s normally sat it out, preferring to save his tyres. Or his energy, bless. Two weeks’ ago we reckon Michael’s five point grid penalty was well made, today we’re cursing it for standing between us and a possible moment of magic tomorrow. Michael won’t win from fifth. Then again we never thought he’d put the F1 W03 on pole.

Mark Webber, remember him? The lantern-jawed Aussie shuffles up from second to pole, with Nico Rosberg joining him on the front row. Lewis Hamilton and Romain Grosjean will line up behind, followed by the Ferraris, which both took part in Q3 for the first time this year, Felipe Massa just one tenth of a second behind Fernando Alonso.

And just to think, two weeks ago it looked over for Schumacher and Massa.

Our man Raikkonen meanwhile could only manage eighth place in the James Hunt helmet (and did you see the BBC’s report from the set of ‘Rush’? How spookily like Hunt does ‘Thor’ look? And as for Daniel Bruhl, could he actually be related to Niki Lauda?)

Maldonado and Vettel bring up the rear of the top ten. Vettel sat Q3 out (booo!) and Maldonado will start 19th having been awarded his very own penalty after a nasty move on Sergio Perez in FP3 worthy of Joey Barton. Hmm… don’t let it all go to your head Pastor!

Jenson Button will start 13th having once again not made Q3. We make no secret of having a bit of a crush on Jenson, so we’ll come back to him in our new qualifying review posting tomorrow morning.

Right. Post your thoughts then get out in the sun. The GP is at 14.00BST tomorrow and the Indy 500 follows at 17.00BST. We’ll be in all day. We hope you will too.

What do you think?

Micheal Schumacher is a legend, Great lap time
show their life in the German old dog.
Webber looks moviated, as do both Alonso
and Massa.

Schuy proves that, their is still a place
in F1 for the bad boys.
he would make, a great panto villian
Schuy behind you o no he not, o yes
he is.
that what Webber, and co are thinking
if Schuy get a good start, he is dangerous
and a proven winner.

Hamilton is looking dangerous, and is my
favourite to win tomorrow.
looking forward to a great race.

Giro d’ italia, is at the Stelvio pass
one of Top Gear favourite roads.

My vote for the winner is Nico Rosberg. At least I really hope so. ;)
I sure wish for Schumacher to finish third, but that, due to a certain Spaniard, will probably not happen. Well, good luck to all drivers. This will be race to remember.

My main worry for Webber is he has this tendency to not get off the line very quickly now that he has taken pole position from fastest qualifier and legend Herr Schumacher who is now relegated to P6.
I hope Red Bull will put all their tactical efforts on Webber to get best position or even a win.
The Mercedes ( Rosberg ) and Renault powered Lotus F1′s ( Raikkonen ) are definitely the dark horse for tomorrow’s race.

alonso to pip hamilton at the start!

It’s so messed up that Maldonado gets a 10 PLACE GRID PENALTY!! Seriously? He’s new to F1 and slightly misjudged when to pull in front of Perez. They clipped slightly. If this was during the race, that’d be called racing. The penalties in F1 are way too extreme….

I don’t think Mercedes will have great race pace, unless they hook up their car absolutely perfectly, the reason they are fast is due to their mechanical set up which allows them to take curbs easily and “nicely”, their tires will wear out quickly. Webber looks confident here, as does Hamilton who looks in supreme form (out qualified his team mate by a whole second). But I reckon Grosjean is the dark horse in tomorrows race, just watch out for him…

well done schumacher, just a shame that you have a 5 place grid penalty, would have liked schumacher on pole for his first pole since his return in 2010.

some replacements for massa (my own list): schumacher, perez, webber(if he leaves red bull.), hamilton(if he leaves mclaren.) and di resta.

schumacher just goes to prove that youth isn’t anything, it’s quality(after maldonado winning in spain.)

podium: 1,hamilton, 2,vettel,3,alonso (although i would like to see some schumacher magic getting him a podium place.)

I am really worried for Maldonado, because i had just heard a news that says he was banned from the principality for about two years for a gross safety related incident (not verified yet)

Yeap, the news seems correct, he was previously banned for life from the principality, for a gross safety incident where he seriously injured a marshall under yellow flags

I think they should change the name of the championship from Formula One to Formula Pirelli, nobody talks about the cars or drivers any more, all you hear is Pirelli, Pirelli, Pirelli… I understand it made the championship more “competitive” but it shouldn’t be only about tires, it should be about the whole package, driver, car and tires, I think it is getting boring as nobody can get any consistency at the moment, why they don’t just roll the tires around the circuit, that would make it even more competitive, by the way, I am not a Schumacher fan, my favourite driver is Lewis, despite the fact I am Brazilian…

I was surprised, out of the blue der Meister ist wieder da. And indeed, a shame that he gets the five places penalty at this particular race…
RE Maldonado: he was, but it was rescinded. For making it into F1 maybe?

Well done Schumacher! Shame about the penalty, but we already knew that. On the subject of penalties: If you compare the severity of their fauls, who can explain to me why Lewis got shoved all the way to the back of the grid last time, while Schumacher and Maldonado only had to go back five and ten places?

well done schumacher, the crash at the gp spain i dont think was his fault.massa made it into q3,so he is making steps forward like the ferrari car is.i have noticed nobody has talked about jenson button, because he cant do quali anymore.webber will start from the front, hoping he gets a decent start for once.on your maldonado/perez point,he didnt just tap wheels with him,he forcefully hit him going into portier.perez crashed of course in q1,feel sorry for him,q3 last year,q1 this year, last years must have been worse but still.

im liking this year, vettel having a test of what its like to be a REAL racer.webbers showing him what he can do,hamilton is doing better than button, mrbuttonfans out there, being mostly the same as the vettelboys,of course hating lewis(he’s clearly shut em up,an he).alonso is doing purely amazing things, the mercedes looked brilliant in quali today, lotus are having a brilliant season, easily the most consistent team this year

unfortunately, force india have gone backwards as a result of sauber and williams having good cars.toro rosso have gone backwards,i always thought they would even though i like that team because last year it did good even though it is the smallest team of the midfield teams,so i was hoping they would get on to better things and get closer to their sister team, red bull.

finally, one thing that astonished me,in q1,kovaleinen was only 1.120seconds off the top, which was in the session hulkenberg,so thats a clear marker for how close it is this year

@MrMagoo

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. There is too much competion at the top now and no one can predict who will be strong in the next race. I’d like it if it was more like 2010 again, where the chapionship can still be won by 5 guys at the last race and they are all in competitive cars, and it just builds the tension surrounding the races if you you have a small number of title contenders, not everyone winning the races.

I don;t know what the hell you guys are even talking about, MIchael sat out Q3 1 time, other then that he was fighting at the top!! All but for some penalties and a broken DRS, and you guys watch F1?!?

@ricketick65: i was thinking of that as well! why do they have to push lewis to the back of the grid in spain, just because of a phoney fuel problem? the fia just spoil the f1 record books.

there are bigger problems with fuel. in 2006, the fia deemed that BAR honda(or buttons old team) had used fuel as ballast, and therefore , BAR were banned for two races.

and schumacher shouldn’t deserve his penalty. replays show that senna moved in front of schumacher, therefore causing the crash, and he gets away. that’s just weird, fia.

maldonado deserves his penalty because he uses his car as a weapon of mass destruction, like hamilton and him in spa 2011. he bashes his car into the side of others. he should be banned if he continues doing this.

if the fia don’t stop these phoney penalties, i will change my name to ban the fia.
