Indian Grand Prix: Vettel dominates practice… Is the championship over?

Well, we promised the end of early morning racing and, thanks to the end of British Summer Time on Sunday/Monday (depending on when you chose to put your clocks back), both qualifying and the race kick of in India at 9.30 in the morning here in the UK. If you have Sky.

And that I’m afraid is all the good news we have from New Delhi, for those of you looking forward to a season-end as exciting as the season started. Alonso and Ferrari were half a second off-the-pace, the pace in question being the Red Bulls RB8s of championship leader Sebastian Vettel and Australian Mark Webber.

Oh dear. If you’re looking for some action this weekend, there might still be tickets available for Top Gear Live.

Why do we feel deflated by the inevitable rise to the top of Red Bull this year? Well, because it’s inevitable and because it’s Red Bull. Incredible achievement and all that for this ‘new’ team, but of course old hands like us on the Sunday Afternoon/Morning sofa remember when Red Bull was the not particularly good Stewart Team, it then became the slightly less good Jaguar team, before embarrassment forced the Brits’ exit and a sale to the well-know purveyor of vodka mixers.

In grave danger of showing our age here, but somehow a Red Bull will never grab us like a McLaren or a Ferrari, or even a Lotus, hypocritically, that team having a even more contrived ancestry. Red Bull is just a ‘meh’, team. And there are only so many times you can laugh at Christian Horner’s hair and name. Sorry, there. We said it.

And while we’re suffering this slightly crotchety Pre Winter Tension and on the subject of Jackie Stewart, can we just the ask the man who sold the team that sold the team to Red Bull to maybe calm down a bit. The tiny Scottish former Champion has in the last month slagged off Michael Schumacher for ever coming back (91 wins JYS, 91 wins… he can do whatever he wants); offered Romain Grosjean driving lessons; and, just last week, had a crack at Vettel himself who is apparently “not yet one of the greats”. Presumably because he’s won one less race than wee Jackie. That shouldn’t be a problem come Sunday JYS. So there’s some balance Red Bull fans.

So Free Practice One: VET, BUT (+0.310), ALO (+0.425), HAM (+0.427) WEB (+0.556). And Free Practice Two; VET, WEB (0.118), ALO (+0.599), ROS (0.801) RAI (0.809).

Sky are live, the BBC only there for highlights. Qual’i is on at 13.00 on Saturday and the race just after 14.00 on Sunday. We won’t be posting any spoilers…

What do you think?

FP2 they’re .6s ahead of the nearest non-RBR (Alonso, ~.1s between Vett and Web).

For one of the first times i agree with TG completely, Red Bull just don’t have as good a name as Mclaren, Lotus or Ferrari.. and their constant domination of races is really dull. they may have their race strategy down to a fine art but once in a while i’d like to see a car actually challenging for first place on the final lap.. just doesn’t happen anymore, shame.

So now that RBR is dominating, you have nothing else to say beside the fact that you don’t like the team. It even sounds like it’s their fault the others don’t keep up. Please do give them the chance to get you to like them.

Yes. The Championship, in my opinion, has been decided. Vettel, at the start of the season, wasn’t very good. I think he was holding back as he did do a double back-to-back Championship title. But, with Alonso struggling, he has made a great last-half drive. Though I’m no German, I actually want him to win. That finger; there’s something about it…

Cymrostig Did youwatch the entire season because if you did you would know that only in the last few races have the Red Bull become dominant so to say for once you would like to see another car time redbull makes it seems as if you we’re not watching the raceing till recent.

Report this comment

Ferrari really needs to do everything form here on to make both their cars as quick or nearly as the Red Bulls if they want Alonso to bag the Drivers’ title.

For sure when Vettel is leading most definitely no one can touch him, but if someone as tactical and a very good thinking driver as Alonso can stick to him Vettel will likely make a mistake.

chicane: how many times do you remember vettel cracking under pressure? maybe a handfull of times in the last 4 years. Remember Monaco 2010 where he was slower than both Ferrari and McLaren on his toes for half the race and his tires were shot since he opted for a 1 stop strategy since he was slow during qualifying and did he crack?

Do not let the few little mishaps like Canada 2011 convince you that he cracks under pressure. There has been times where he was not in the fastest car, lets not forget that.

by no means am i supporting Vettel i am just responding to your statement, I support Ferrari since 1997

This thread is sad, If Vettel does well everyone hates it but if another does well, everyone loves it. Vettes fan base must be very small even though journalists and drivers alike says how nice and humble he is, say he is most hard working etc

fans are strange

F1 fans are barking mad. If Vettel wins a race it is because of the car. If someone else wins it is because they are great drivers. Seriously? Webber is more experienced than Vettel but he down the standings. So is it the car or the driver or the team? Coulthard retired and named his replacement. His replacement is winning. Good call Coulthard.

LETS BE HONEST, RED BULL RIGHT NOW HAVE THE BEST CAR ON THE GRID. IF VETTLE FINISHES INFRONT OF MARK IT´S BECAUSE HE´S BETTER. BUT WHEN THE CAR IS 0.6 SEC FASTER IT´S BECAUSE OF MR. NEWLY. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RED BULL AND FERRARI IS THAT WHAT EVER FERRARI DO TO MAKE THE CAR BETTER IT´S STRAIGHT AWAY IN THE NEWSPAPERS. IT´S A HANDICAP THAT FERRARI HAVE THAT RED BULL DON´T. ALL WEEK THE PAPERS HAVE BEEN GOING ON ABOUT THE NEW PIECES FERRARI HAVE FOR THIS RACE AND NOTHING ABOUT THE NEW PIECES RED BULL HAVE SENT. RED BULL AREN´T GOING TO STAY WITH THIER ARMS CROSSED SO THAT THIER OPPONENTS CAN REACH THEM.
HOPE TO SEE A GOOD RACE TOMORROW AND NOT AS BORING AS THE LAST ONE.
GO ALOO!!!!

I am tired of reading it is the the car and not Vettel.

GET OVER IT – he is one of the greatest ever and legend in the making. If you don´t like him? Good. If you prefer your local or favorite drive? good!

That said, for me Alonso is still the best this year.

Regarding liking / dislike a F1 team. It´s like football to build a loyal fan base it takes many years. Also there is always the local support. I have many italian friends, who are fanatic Ferrari supporter, they couldnt care less about the driver. Ferrari is as important as the national football team. Which nation is RBR? Not even austrian…..

They are not national, they are too young in F1 terms.

@Obi-Wan

They have had years to ‘like’ them. They dominated last year. Domination is boring.

@MercedesSLS_AMG
He wasn’t ‘holding back’ anything. He was out-qualified by Webb in the first 3 races. Random guess as to why this is is possibly because of the removal of the off-throttle blown diffusers which suited Vett’s driving more than Webber.

@MrSpeed
Have you seen Monaco? Where can you overtake? Put your car in the way and you win, simple. Combine that with RBR’s usual gearing and fantastic traction (acceleration rather than top-speed ala Monza last year) means they couldn’t overtake in the DRS zone. Few times, yes. Last year maybe two or three times.

This year, McLaren have failed miserably. Driver/strategy/pit-stop/ logistical/mechanical failures have made sure they lost the championship. For example, Hamilton has had 2 suspension and a gearbox failure in the last 3 races. They have had the best car this year overall but if mistakes happen like this then you aren’t going to win.

@mark
Look at the races he won this season.

Bahrain – qualified first, Hamilton had a hilariously bad pitstop. 1234 RBR-Mc-RBR-Mc shows that they had very similar cars.

Singapore – qualified third, Hamilton’s gearbox failed and Maldonado had a hydraulics failure (after a meh race).

Japan and Korea – best cars.

@Sad Sack
How many times has Webber’s KERS been un-operational? Experience =/= speed. Is JB faster than Ham? No. Better racer, possibly. Faster? No.

CONSIDERING THAT I AM ITALIAN AND I AM A FERRARI SUPPORTER FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS ODD, TO BE A GOOD DRIVER DOESN´T MEAN WINNING. VETTLE STILL HAS ALOT TO PROVE JUST AS ALONSO HAS DONE IN THE PAST AND AS MICHEAL HAS DONE ALSO.

Report this comment

@luigi

yes I missed that part of my statement, that my friends couldn´t care less about the driver if they are fast and winning for them. Most important over all is always the red car.

Michael is a legend with Ferrari – but did somebody really liked him a lot? I don´t see that.

Agree regarding Alonso – he is still the best – and Vettel still as a lot to prove and he will.

HOPE TO SEE VETTLE IN FERRARI IN 2014!!

@Luigi

that´s not going to happen until 2016 I am afraid. Alonso`s contract is fixed until than and they will never drive into the same team. And which sane team owner would want that. LOL

BUT – Vettel will drive for Ferrari. Talking about legend drivers. There is only one legend team, which is Ferrari. I am 100% that he will drive there sooner or later.

VERY TRUE

lol @ ananymour we all have our opinions but i guess you think that blown diffusers are back in now so thats why Vettel is doing better? do you NOT remember even Mark saying that Vettel was uncomfortable with the new setup from pre season and just couldnt get on with it. You forget also that Vettels had his fair share of mechanical issues … not just mark.

vettel wins its the car hu .. yep go ahead think so while he rapes your fav driver for the rest of his career

lol @ mark faster or as fast as Vettel .. this guy turns a blind eye to facts and favors what he wants to think .. hilarious

Yeah if McLaren only would could should get over yourself mr high n mighty
oh i know you have some clever respond but get over it … ur wrong

Report this comment

@marty

Nope, not at all. Setup is a massive part of the car. He’s just gotten his setup to suit his driving style. Fair share, meaning 2 issues? Valencia and Monza, are there any more I’m forgetting? That’s not a ‘fair share’. That’s 2 in 16 races.

Wins with the car…. what’s his win % with the fastest car and without? This year it’s 100% car (inherited Singapore, similar in Bahrain, Japan and Korea was definitely better). Last year RBR had 18/19 pole positions and only won 12/19.

I didn’t say Mark was faster, I said he was faster at the start of the season because of the setup of the car not favouring Vett’s driving style.

Btw, how long has RBR been your favourite team? Since it’s inception? I doubt it. Were you a Ferrari guy 2000-2004, Renault 2005/06, Ferrari up until 2009 then then RBR 2010 onwards?

Report this comment

RBR is not my favorite team,I grew up in the Schumacher era so that gives you a hint to who is my favorite driver

you think you are right about everything dont you’.

Vettel is doing his job to the bet of his ability and all you guys do is try to rain on his parade because he is out performing your fav, drier or team, Shame.

i like when i read and see the arrogant guys being proven wrong.

Vettel does what he does because he is a great driver. you guys can say whatever you want, records speak for themselves. Alanso and hamilton are not better.

Redbull is fastest best team get over it.

Brsilbst
Yeah, the race that Alonso has done is worse that vettles. Just goles to show Who is the arrogante.

Report this comment

^ Lol. Alonso isn’t better? You’re joking, right? Alonso is the best driver on the grid, no question. He was still leading up until Korea despite having a worse car than Vettel for probably 10 or 11 out of those 16 races. You seriously need to learn about how much cars make a difference. Like 2009 for example. How come he didn’t win the championship? Simple, the car. JB won 6 of the first 7 races because of the car.

Also, blown diffusers. RBR developed it first, so it was the best. This is why they struggled at the start of the season because it was such an important part of the car as it was . If you can’t get the setup right, you don’t win. The car is so important. Is Mansell a much better driver than Senna because he wiped the floor with him in 1992? Hell no. It was the car.

Report this comment

Not as in developed first meaning best, more that they had the most time to develop the blown diffuser, they had a very nice package where they got the most out of it., so it was the best.
