There was sadness in the air at Le Mans this weekend, which no doubt contributed to the overall ‘Le Mans Lag’ that was trending on Twitter today (drivers Allan McNish, Anthony Davidson and Karun Chandhok all noting how their body clocks were still on La Sarthe’s racing time zone). Allan Simonsen’s untimely and tragic passing following his accident after three laps remains a sad reminder that, as we wrote yesterday, racing carries with it a constant, mortal threat.
But the race went on at the wishes of Allan’s family, and Le Mans became united under the #WinItForAllan banner, everyone donating their personal stories to the storybook of the fallen Aston driver whose bio simply read, ‘living the dream’.
It was some race, too, Audi taking the expected victory, but not having an easy time of it. Toyota kept the R18 long-tails in constant check throughout, even up until the last lap, but there was never any stopping the herculean charge of Kristensen, McNish and Duval. Kristensen himself now chalks up an epic nine wins at La Sarthe, while McNish makes it a hat-trick. The Great Dane was choked up after the race, dedicating it not to his father (who sadly passed earlier this year), but to Simonsen.
There was action lower down the ranks, too, with a fantastic battle in LMP2, denying rookie Jann Mardenborough – one of TG.com’s ‘ones to watch’ – a podium finish, while the remaining Aston in the GTE class fought long and hard with the Porsches until the very end. The team still managed to get on the third step, hanging the Danish flag with pride and respect for their fallen comrade. It was a sight that could have melted stone.
Elsewhere, as we’ve shown you, the campsites were buzzing and the fans were electric. If you’ve been keeping up with TG.com’s live blog, you’ll know the score. But, here’s your chance to relive 24 hours of epic action, from the drivers’ parade right up through to the podium ceremony, with our roundup gallery.
