In the most Australian news of 2013, Australian man and friend of Top Gear, Mark Webber, has announced he will race alongside fellow Australian man and friend of Top Gear, Eric Bana, in Australia’s most famous race, the Bathurst 12 Hour.
Minutes after receiving his carriage clock from Red Bull, Webber revealed on Twitter he would tackle Oz’s longest, booziest race in 2015, with actor and dedicated petrolhead Bana joining him on driving duties.
Should be a rapid team. We know Webber’s no slowcoach, partly because he’s sustained 14 seasons at the sharp end of F1, but mainly because he cracked a time of 1m43.1s around the TG test track in our venerable Suzuki Liana.
Bana – the star of Hulk, Troy and possibly some other single-syllable films – has also been stamped with the official Top Gear Seal Of Fastness, clocking the quickest-ever ‘civilian’ wet lap in our Suzuki Liana, a fine 1m47.5s.
We don’t know yet what car Webbo’n'Banno – great name for an Aussie crime-fighting duo, no? – will drive at Bathurst, but the best bet is a Porsche 911 GT3: Webber, remember, will pilot Porsche’s LMP1 car at the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hour race.
A 911 is all well and good, sure, but it’s hardly the Australian car this most Australian of teams deserves, is it? The petition to get Webbo’n’Banno in a rusty Holden tray back ute with an LS2 V8 under the bonnet starts here…
