Well, that was a weird end to the Singapore grand prix. While Alonso and Vettel scrapped over the last few laps, and Webber held on by the threads of his (rapidly disintegrating) tyres, Heikki Kovalainen became a 150mph bonfire.

UPDATE: TopGear does an actual F1 pit stop

Today, I was given a job in a real, live, F1 pitstop. The days of graft paid off and the lads at Lotus gave me a set of overalls, a space-age helmet, and a fire extinguisher.

When I arrived on Thursday, I fully expected to become Chief Kettle Technician. To avoid this, I decided to make horrible tea so that, after 16 nasty cups, the team would find me something else to do.

Exclusive: TG joins Lotus pit crew in Hockenheim

Over the next few days TopGear will be getting closer to F1 than ever before. The guys at Lotus have rather bravely agreed to let staffer Dan Read (that’s me) join the team for the German GP as a sort of guest mechanic.
