Formula One 2012 half-term report: Toro Rosso and Force India

Yesterday was the turn of the “Q1 massive” — Caterham, Marussia and HRT, bless em. Two of them got an A for effort; it’s hard not to be impressed with their doggedness and, in the case of HRT and Marussia, the raw fact that they are making their cars faster. Relatively of course.

Malaysian GP: Sutil vs Hamilton

Luckless in both Bahrain and Australia, Adrian Sutil was due a change of fortunes in this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix – but the young German very much made his own luck in Sepang as he impressively kept a faster Lewis Hamilton at bay throughout the closing stages to clinch an excellent and well-deserved fifth place.

Lotus back, BMW saved

It’s been 15 years since Lotus last competed in F1, but as of 2010, they’re back. Lotus F1 will occupy the 13th spot on the grid next season, backed by a group of Malaysian entrepreneurs.

Monza: when it rains, it pours

Half an hour after the end of the final qualifying session here at Monza, it rained. Not just a few drops, but a full-scale apocalyptic deluge, as vicious as the storm that engulfed last year’s Italian GP.

Monza quali

Lewis Hamilton may have made a stunning last minute grab at getting pole position for the Italian GP, but it looks like the two Brawns are best placed to win tomorrow’s race.

More Brawn for Merc?

Mercedes-Benz is set to buy a chunk of championship leaders Brawn GP, according to F1’s rumour mill. The German manufacturer already has a long-standing stake in McLaren, and supplies engines to Force India, but it’s apparently keen to tie up something more substantial with the Brackley-based team.

Fisi in at Fezza

After what seems like ages of speculation, Giancarlo Fisichella has been confirmed for a Ferrari drive from Monza next weekend.

Pause Button

Jenson Button will look at today and think that it could have been a lot worse. Taken out by Renault rookie Romain Grosjean on the first lap, Jenson could then only watch on from the pit wall, with his fingers crossed.
