Bernie Ecclestone’s pallor may not flatter the 77-year-old under the amazing floodlights but there could be no disguising his inner glow as he walked the pit lane. F1’s guru had taken a punt by pushing for a night race in Singapore. After the first day of practice, many of the doubters had been silenced.
“They’ve missed a trick here,” I said to Jamie Hibbard as we watched lunchtime’s free practice in Singapore, the dulcet tones of our very own Maurice Hamilton ringing over the radio. “They should’ve turned all the floodlights off, and fitted the cars with massive great rally lamps instead.”
I’ve been fortunate enough to see the birth of several street circuits and Singapore – so far – ranks among the best of them. The standard of preparation and finish is extremely high with the 3.15 miles ready for action at the expense of heavy local traffic on the edge of the city’s CBD.
